FULTON SCIENCE ACADEMY MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM PLACES 6TH AT THE NATIONAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TOURNAMENT!

The Fulton Science Academy Science Olympiad Team recorded its best performance in team history by placing 6th at the 2021 National Tournament. The tournament was hosted by the University of Arizona but was conducted virtually with students competing from home. The team qualified for the tournament by winning the State Championship.

β€œThis was such a sweet victory for our team,” said head coach Pam Walsh, recalling that last year’s state and national tournaments were cancelled due to COVID. β€œAll but two of our team members returned for this year, and from the start, they were super focused, diligent, and engaged, in spite of the challenges of transitioning to a virtual format.”

The team began virtual practices over Zoom in September and competed in ten virtual Invitational tournaments. The team never met in person until they gathered to film the team video for the opening ceremonies. β€œPre-COVID we would do a lot together as a team,” said Assistant Coach Julianne Oliver. β€œStudents used to love staying late on Friday evenings for practices and traveling and competing at in-person tournaments. It’s remarkable that they retained their enthusiasm and dedication. Each and every team member and coach contributed to our success this season.”

Principal Dr. Sener said, “knowing that there are over 7,000 science olympiad teams in the nation, this is an incredible achievement. I am so proud of our students and coaches. Now that we are one of the top 10 teams in the nation, we can aim for the national championship in the coming years. DREAM BIG!”

The team now awaits delivery of its sixth-place team trophy and medals. Students placing in the top ten include the below list, but every student placed remarkably well across all events:
